Although the season officially changed in September, the quiet transformation we all yearn for unfolds in November. It is this time of year that autumn becomes noticeably more present all around us - the fallen leaves that blanket the sidewalks, the fog that drapes over the nearby fields in the early mornings, and the oak trees standing tall against the bright orange morning skies.

The days are growing shorter, signaling that the festive season has arrived and that winter is not far behind.  Long past are the days that require wicks and wax, but there is still something about a morning candle that I cherish. It is almost as if the flickers are its gentle whispers, saying - Don’t forget you, too, can slow down. I thank it for that reminder.

It is easy to press forward at this time of year. There are parties to host, decorations to hang, gifts to buy, and treats to bake; all added on top of jammed-packed days that leave us wondering how we do it all. Cramming to complete our daily to-do lists, especially during the holidays, is what keeps us pushing those much-needed moments in stillness away. But if we pause long enough, we will actually feel the shifts in the seasons, not just see them with a passing glance. This is where the magic lies.

Mother Earth is always wise in her words. We just need to listen. “Enjoy the slowing rhythm of nature,” she murmurs. Her words hushed by the world, simultaneously shouting “Go!” I urge you to choose the former.

Although this note is short, the message is powerful. Embrace the season as it was intended and heed the timeless wisdom from nature. You do not have to earn quiet days, and you don’t need permission to set holiday boundaries.

As we enter the final weeks of November, pause for a moment, light a candle, steam some milk, and enjoy a freshly baked scone curled up with your favorite blanket.

Stay cozy.

xx
